(scroll down to attached .pdf file) 1. Meeting in Belgium – Reemst during the ESBG 2009 from 25th to 30th of August 2009 The whole Leonardo group met for the first time on the ESBG in Belgium. This was a good opportunity to network and place the project into a bigger context. The partners met in the office of Casa Calida in a meeting room built with straw bales. They introduced each other and presented briefly their personal background and the role in their organization. All partners agreed to support the British partner, who did not get the funding from the EU, so it could be still part of the project. Belgium took over the responsibility as coordinator instead of Great Britain. The group agreed upon the goals and relegated the tasks for the project: 1. Setting up an overview on the state of the art of SB in Europe to come to general standards and certifications useful in whole Europe 2. Gathering experiences of existing SB courses and workshops in Europe and with this information working on a educational program to train SB for self builders but also for building contractors Rules were set up for communication and for work. A yahoo group was established to share informations and keep in contact in between the meetings. There was an agreement to use Skype conferences when needed.

2. Meeting in Spain - Barcelona from 21st to 24th of January 2010
All partners made short presentations of their main subjects and gave input for the working groups. Amzonails: Loadbearing techniques and their structure for training Spain: Development of a questionnaire that could be filled out on-line and was to be sent to the European networkers list, that was Slovakia: Presentation of the training program of clay plaster based on the European credit point system for vocational education with units, sessions and info sheets for practice and theory for different levels. Acquired knowledge, skills and competences should be defined Germany: Guidelines and regulations as framework for quality control was presented. A result could be a ETA (European Technical Approval) as addition or instead of national regulations. This was difficult subject, so first there should be agreements on Best Building Practice with detailed properties of constructions. France: Development of a building code that does not restrict buildings methods and does bring new barriers to SB. They should be set up in a way that professionals get approvals to built. Results of testings and research should be enclosed. Results: Working groups were established to work on a professional training programme and on building regulations. A brainstorming The training group worked out a structure for 10 units with topics It was agreed to use teamdrive to share files and documents.
3. Meeting in Germany – Verden
All working groups finished their tasks in between the meetings and presented the first results. They now worked together on collecting general and specific informations, on evaluating building and training Practice and creating documentations. The working group Best Building Practice (BBP) worked on an evaluation method with definitions for fire behaviour, thermal performance, biohygrothermal performance, loadbearing and approaches to natural building. One aim was to collect the different National Building Regulations and the state of science and technology in the different countries. The aim was to create a final documentation. An ultimate goal to integrate these results into European Building Regulations. The working group on questionnaire is collecting national data (Europe) about stakeholders/actors national organizations, SB- training and their specifications, details, target groups, recognition and funding, common SB techniques and methods, approvability (chance for building permission), barriers for further dissemination of SBB, and SBB- Projects finished or under construction. Once finished the questionnaire will be published on Google, the link will be sent to all National SB organizations and to the European networkers. First all partners of Leonardo fill out the questionnaire and give their feedback it improve it. The working group SBB Training sketched the training programme divided into units according to different topics. It was structured into 10 units of equal length of 25 hours, altogether 200 hours. One topic will be worked out in detail with sessions, content and info sheet to be able to set up a pilot workshop during the last Leonardo meeting in Slovakia. The first 4 units got structured in detail with the main topics and sessions. The interim report has been prepared with process and results of the working groups and with difficulties and their solutions. To clear upcoming tensions during the meeting we made a game about the group atmosphere after heavy discussion in afternoon about tasks and results of Leonardo project and wrote points about the strength of the group, the weakness of the group and then suggestions for group. This reflection on the dynamic of the group helped us to value our differences and to appreciate our efforts for understanding and communication.
4. Meeting in France – Carcasonne The meetings and the working periods get more and more effective each time we meet. We all discuss the planning made in advance and agree on the agenda of the meeting. Everybody expresses his expectations for the meeting and tells what tasks he has done and will do. We take some time in the different working groups to give feedback on the expectations and to decide how each group will manage the work for the meeting. The Training group will finish the structure of training programme, teaching method and session plan. They discuss the topics already decided and work on between the meetings. They discuss and create an agreed overview. Discussing and finishing the units which were done by partners between meetings. The BBP group will start with describing SB methods and will draw templates. They will set criteria which can be used for comparisons with other building techniques. All good practice/best practice will then be available to all in public domain. The results will be published on European website. Their will be drawings of wall construction in 2D and 3D - 4 m wide / 2 stores heigh. Six most interesting SB building methods for best building practice will be described in detail. The Questionnaire group has 11-13 results filled Close to our meeting place the castle of Carcasonne After some discussion, we decided to use a wiki for our results and to set the link on the European website www.strawbale-net.eu/leonardo
we have 3 tools to communicate for Leonardo project
5. Meeting in Germany – Verden The Leonardo group met with five new possible partners , who got funding for a preparatory visit. We explained and showed the results of our previous work and worked together on a new Leonardo application with the aim to accomplish a European wide training course. At the same time the working group continued their work. The BBP group structured a survey with 6 different selected SB constructions:
In addition they development calculation of sustainability to evaluate of the best building The Training group worked further on the training course with its 10 units. The 3rd unit will be realized in the last meeting, to get feedback on the first tryout. The group created and agreed on structure for SB training with 10 equal units. By extending the practise or by adding optional techniques it is possible to get longer training program. Unit 1 (25 h): Straw Talk (Basic Knowledge about the material straw/strawbales) Unit 2 (25 h): From Bale to House (Techniques for Unit 3 (xy h): Techniques for Load Bearing Unit 4 (xy h): Techniques for Hybrid (optional CST, Unit 5 (25 h): Siding Unit 6 (30 h): Building Physics and Sustainability Unit 7 (35 h): Concept for the house Unit 8 (25 h): Marketing and communication Unit 9 (35 h): Building site practice Unit 10 (xy h): Teaching Methods (optional)
6. Meeting in Slovakia – Bratislava
After having developed a curriculum for a straw bale training with 10 different units, session plans and several lists of content, the Leonardo group tried out one unit with a 3 days pilot workshop, that give a short insight into 3 different ways of SB construction. On the first day there was an introduction to the subject to find out the level of knowledge of the participants and to prepare the training of the 3 techniques. On the 2nd and 3rd day the basics of the 3 different SB techniques have been trained on a building site. The practical parts were supported by theory, presentations of examples and details of constructions. The participants were mostly beginners, who gave feed back from their point of view. Some participants were skilled trainers, who could give feed back for the used methods and the way of teaching. This gave a good feed back to improve the quality of the training units and to detail them further more in a next project. Two Leonardo members produced questions for a questionnaire by participating to the workshop in the background, structuring the several parts of the workshop and formulating relevant questions. At the end of the first day of the pilot workshop all the participants individually fill in this questionnaire. The BBP group presented the layout of their work, some of the group prepared the final report, some worked on the presentations to be published on the website. It was the last meeting of this Leonardo working project and we made the conclusion that despite some misunderstandings at the beginning we were capable to work very concentrated and effectively together.. This last meeting has been a great success.
